Coombe Webmaster:

When did you start cycling?

Werner du Preez:

I started taking cycling seriously in about 2002.

Coombe Webmaster:

How often and when do you practice?

Werner du Preez:

About 10 - 12 hours per week. In the early morning (05h00), preferably.

Coombe Webmaster:

What the highs and lows of your cycling career thus far?

Werner du Preez:

The highlights have been the Absa Cape Epic 2009 8 days, 700 km's, 14000m climbing) finishing this race was a personal milestone in my cycling career, I was also a Subaru Sabie MTB Ultra Marathon Finisher in 2009 (100km, 2800m climbing).

The low points are any race that I can NOT finish.

Coombe Webmaster:

Dealing with all the rough terrains must surely be quite dangerous?

Werner du Preez:

Like any sport there are risks one has to be aware of, but I guess you could be knocked over by a car or even fall out of bed and get injured, so I don’t see Mountain Trial Biking as that dangerous.

Coombe Webmaster:

What motivates you when you exercise?

Werner du Preez:

Fear is a great motivator! A race like the Cape Epic is so big and so challenging, you can not fail to exercise. If you arrive unprepared for the race, you are almost assured not to finish.

Coombe Webmaster:

Do you follow a strict diet plan?

Werner du Preez:

I have enough food for 3 men, 5 to 6 good portions throughout the day, but I eat very little junk-food. Good coffee is of course my 'petrol'.

Coombe Webmaster:

What do you do for relaxation?

Werner du Preez:

Breakaway cycling weekends, it doesn’t always have to be a race. I also enjoy the cinema , dining out, coffee shops and gardening.

Coombe Webmaster:

Well thank you for spending time with us and we wish you all the best with next years cycling challenges.
